As with any new antivirus, you should run a full scan shortly after installation. Before the full scan, it finished in about four minutes after that initial full scan the virus scan took less than a minute. The Virus scan only checks locations containing installed applications, so it runs faster. A repeat scan finished in just over four minutes. F-Secure clearly performed some optimization during that first scan, most likely marking files that are safe to skip in subsequent scans. On my standard clean test system, a full scan finished in 24 minutes, which is about half the time it took when I last tested this product, and less than half the current average of 64 minutes. Labels and text that were pale blue on white before are now black or dark blue. Instead of a pale turquoise, the top banner is now a bold navy blue. The current version’s color scheme is a bit different from what we’ve seen in the past. A simple two-item menu at left switches between the main antivirus page and a page of tools that let you check for updates, view recent events, submit a sample, and more. You click the big blue button to launch a scan or click a link to open the settings page. If something's wrong, it describes the problem and switches to a red icon. When all is well, it reports "Your computer is protected," and it displays a green icon.

F-Secure also costs $39.99 per year, but that subscription lets you install it on three PCs, whereas most others offer one license for the same price. It doesn't even try to steer your browser away from phishing websites, though its advanced network protection effectively cuts off access to malware-hosting URLs. F-Secure Anti-Virus, by contrast, focuses on the central task of defending your system against all sorts of malware, including ransomware. Firewall, spam filter, VPN-you name it, they've got it. Some companies pack in so many extras the basic antivirus seems like a security suite. We call them all antivirus tools, but what’s in them varies a lot.
